A black gi looks sharp on day one. The question is whether it still looks sharp — and holds its weave — after a hundred sessions. Most don’t fail on the mat. They fade in the laundry.
The best black BJJ gi for you depends on your weave preference, your frame, and how often you wash it. A pre-shrunk pearl-weave black gi handles competition and daily drilling without blowing up your budget. A single-weave is fine for hot gyms and lighter training loads. Check the current price on Amazon before you buy — deals shift week to week.
- Pearl weave is the all-rounder: lighter than double weave, holds its structure session after session.
- Black hides mat wear and sweat stains better than white — but it fades fast in hot water. Cold wash, every time.
- Black is IBJJF-legal: you can compete without switching gi colors.
What Makes a Black Gi Worth Buying
The color’s the easy call. Construction is what separates a gi that lasts three years from one you replace after six months.
Three things matter:
Weave. Pearl weave is the sweet spot for most grapplers. It’s lighter than double weave, tighter than single, and doesn’t pill after a month of training. Single weave is fine if your gym runs hot and you want something that breathes. Double weave is durable, but the extra weight adds up over a long session — most beginners don’t need that.
Pre-shrunk fabric. Every gi shrinks a little. The key is a little. A pre-shrunk gi holds its size through normal cold-wash, air-dry care. A non-pre-shrunk one can drop a full size on you without warning — and you won’t notice until the sleeves are hitting mid-forearm.
Collar stitching. Grab the lapel and pull hard. It should hold without flexing at the seam. The collar takes the most abuse in grip fighting — it’s where cheap gis give out first.

Here’s the part most buyers skip: once you decide on black, the weave type you pick is what actually determines how the gi performs over time. The full weave breakdown is worth a read before you add to cart.
How to Find Your Black Gi Size
Black gis size identically to white ones. There’s no color-based size difference. Use height and weight together — when you’re between two sizes, go up. Gis tighten slightly with washes; one that’s too small never gets better.
| Size | Height (cm) | Height (ft/in) | Weight (kg) | Weight (lbs) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A0 | 162–168 | 5’4″–5’6″ | 64–70 | 141–154 |
| A1 | 168–170 | 5’6″–5’7″ | 70–77 | 154–170 |
| A2 | 170–178 | 5’7″–5’10” | 77–86 | 170–190 |
| A3 | 178–188 | 5’10″–6’2″ | 86–102 | 190–225 |
| A4 | 185–193 | 6’1″–6’4″ | 104–118 | 229–260 |
| A5 | 190–200 | 6’3″–6’7″ | 118–136 | 260–300 |

Keeping Your Black Gi Actually Black
Here’s what nobody mentions when you buy a black gi: it will fade. All of them do. The difference between fading in six months and fading in three years is almost entirely how you wash it.
Hot water breaks down the dye faster than training does. One 60°C machine cycle does more damage to the color than 20 sessions on the mat. The rule is simple, and it doesn’t take extra time:
- Flip it inside-out before every wash — protects the outer fibers and keeps the dye from rubbing against other laundry.
- Cold wash, 30°C max — always. No exceptions, not even “just this once.”
- No bleach, no fabric softener — bleach strips dye in trace amounts; softener weakens the pearl-weave fibers over time.
- Air dry flat, out of direct sunlight — UV fades black fabric faster than heat does. Inside or in full shade is the move.
- Wash after every session — sweat sitting in the weave degrades both the dye and the fabric. Don’t skip a wash to save time.
Follow those five steps and a quality black gi stays sharp for years. Skip step 4 and you’ll see it greying out before the end of your first competition season.
Break In a New Black Gi Before Your First Class
New gis are stiff. That’s not a defect — that’s the weave before it’s been worked in. A stiff gi on your first roll means your guard feels tighter than it should and your grips don’t move naturally with the fabric.
Borrowed from wrestling warm-up culture: spend 10 minutes in your new gi before the first session doing solo movement only. Forward rolls. Hip escapes (shrimping). A few Granby rolls. Basic stance and step. You’re not drilling technique — you’re just moving in every direction the gi needs to flex. The weave opens where your body actually bends, not where a folding crease pressed it flat.
One real session and it starts to feel like yours. Two to three cold washes and it settles into your actual size. That’s the break-in window — use it deliberately and the fit improves faster.

FAQ
- Is black an IBJJF-legal gi color?
- Yes. IBJJF approves white, blue, and black gis at competition. A clean black gi with no illegal patches meets the color standard.
- Will my black BJJ gi fade?
- All black gis fade eventually. Cold water and air drying extend the color life significantly. Hot water is the main driver of early fading.
- Which weave is best for a black gi?
- Pearl weave for most grapplers — it’s lighter than double weave, holds structure well, and is the standard competition option. Single weave works for hot gyms and lighter training.
- How do I pick my black gi size?
- Use height and weight together from the sizing table above. Between sizes? Go up — gis tighten slightly with washes, and one that starts too small never improves.
- Can kids train in a black gi?
- Yes. Stylso’s kids’ gi is available in black, running K000 through K4. Check the current price on Amazon.
- What’s the real difference between a black gi and a white gi?
- Same weave, cut, and sizing. Black hides mat burn and sweat stains better; white shows dirt faster and needs more careful bleach management. Both perform identically on the mat and are IBJJF-legal.
