Fold your gi jacket by crossing the sleeves over the chest, folding it into thirds, then laying the pants on top and wrapping the belt around the bundle. Compact, crease-free, mat-ready. Full steps below.
- Fold dry — folding a damp gi traps bacteria and sets permanent creases
- Five steps, 90 seconds: cross sleeves → fold thirds → pants on top → belt wrap
- For gym bags, use the travel roll — smaller and holds together on the road
Why the Fold Matters
Most people don’t fold their gi. They stuff it.
Class ends, you’re drained, and the gi gets crammed in damp and forgotten until the locker room smell hits you next time. There’s a better way — and it takes 90 seconds.
A gi stuffed in damp is a bacterial playground. Moisture locks into the weave. The smell comes back stronger each wash. The fabric breaks down faster at the collar and sleeves — exactly where your grips take the most stress.
Judo players fold their judogi carefully for a reason. It’s part tradition, part smart gear care. The collar stays stiffer. The lapels stay even. Your grip work is better when your gi is well-kept. BJJ borrowed a lot from judo — the fold is worth borrowing too.
How to Fold a BJJ Gi — 5 Steps
Start with a dry gi. Non-negotiable. Hang it out after washing — at least two hours, ideally overnight. Fold it damp and you’re trapping moisture in the weave.
- Lay the jacket flat — Face-down on a clean surface. Collar at the top, sleeves spread out. Not twisted at the shoulders.
- Cross the sleeves over the chest — Fold one sleeve across the back toward the opposite side. Fold the other sleeve over that. You’ve cut the width roughly in half.
- Fold the jacket into thirds — Bring the left third in toward the center. Fold the right side over. You should have a clean, flat rectangle — roughly the size of a folded bath towel.
- Fold the pants and layer them on top — Fold the pants in half lengthwise, then in half again. Place them face-down on top of the folded jacket.
- Wrap the belt around the bundle — Lay the belt across the middle. Wrap it once around and tuck the ends in. That’s your lock — the whole bundle stays together in your bag.
Flat Fold, Travel Roll, or Hang — Which One When
| Method | Best For | Wrinkle Risk | Pack Size |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flat fold | Home storage, drawers, shelves | Low | Medium |
| Travel roll | Gym bags, travel | Medium | Small |
| Hang up | After washing — always first | None | — |

Flat fold is your everyday standard. Good for shelves and lockers.
Travel roll is for your bag. Roll the jacket from collar to hem like a sleeping bag. Roll the pants around the outside. Belt around it all. Compact, doesn’t come undone on the road.
Hang it first — always. After washing, hang your gi inside out to dry fully. Never fold a wet gi. The inside contacts your skin directly — letting it air is the fastest way to break down bacteria without an extra hot wash.
One Tip Most Grapplers Skip
Turn your gi inside out before hanging it to dry. The inside is where the sweat goes.
It’s the same habit wrestlers use with singlets and headgear — air the contact surface first, then pack it. Your skin will thank you, and so will your training partners. Mat bacteria can cause skin infections if sweat sits in the weave long enough. Wash your gi after every one or two sessions.

The Right Gi Holds Its Fold
A well-made gi folds clean because the weave is even and the fabric’s pre-shrunk. Cheaper gis bunch and shift every time — you fight the fold as much as the fabric.
Stylso — BJJ gis & combat-sports apparel. The Stylso BJJ Gi is pearl-weave, pre-shrunk, and IBJJF-approved. It holds its shape wash after wash — men’s and kids’ sizes, multiple colourways. Check the current options on Amazon.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you fold a BJJ gi for a gym bag?
Use the travel roll: roll the jacket from collar to hem, roll the pants around the outside, wrap the belt around the bundle. Compact and holds together in any bag.
Should you fold or roll a BJJ gi?
Fold for home storage (drawers, shelves). Roll for gym bags and travel. Either way — always fold or roll it dry.
Can you fold a damp BJJ gi?
No. A damp gi folded tight is a bacteria trap. Hang it to air dry first — at least two hours. Then fold.
How do you get creases out of a BJJ gi?
Wash it and hang to dry (no dryer). Most fold creases come out with a regular wash. Stubborn collar creases can be dampened and pressed flat by hand before hanging.
How should you store a BJJ gi long-term?
Hang it on a wide hanger. A wide hanger preserves the collar and lapels better than a fold for long-term storage. Short-term: the flat fold works fine.
Does how you fold affect the gi’s lifespan?
Yes. Folding dry prevents moisture damage and mildew in the weave. Proper storage also keeps the collar stiff — which matters for grip work in training.
