You’re 169 cm, 73 kg, and the size chart isn’t helping. A1 fits 168–170 cm and 70–77 kg. A2 fits 170–178 cm and 77–86 kg. You’re right in the crack between them. Here’s how you pick — and the one measurement most charts skip that makes the call obvious.
- A1 fits up to about 170 cm and 77 kg. A2 starts right at that boundary — jacket span is the real tiebreaker when height and weight split.
- Between sizes? Size up. A gi that’s slightly roomy is safer than one that’s too short in the sleeves after your first few washes.
- Women and teen grapplers often land in A1 — don’t default to A2 because it sounds like the safer adult size.

A1 vs A2 — The Numbers (From the Real STYLSO Chart)
Here’s every measurement that matters, straight from the Stylso A-series. A = jacket span · B = jacket length · D = trouser length · E = trouser waist. These aren’t estimates — they come from the official Stylso product chart.
| Size | Height (cm) | Height (in) | Weight (kg) | Weight (lb) | Jacket Span (A) | Jacket Length (B) | Trouser Length (D) | Waist (E) | Best For | Shop |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A1 | 168–170 | 5’6″–5’7″ | 70–77 | 154–170 | 160 cm | 73 cm | 94 cm | 48 cm | Lighter adults, many women, smaller builds | Shop on Amazon |
| A2 | 170–178 | 5’7″–5’10″ | 77–86 | 170–190 | 169 cm | 76 cm | 99 cm | 51 cm | Average-height adults, most beginners | Shop on Amazon |

That 9 cm difference in jacket span is what catches most people out. A gi too tight across the back limits your posture — you’ll feel it when you try to shrimp in side control or reach for a collar grip. Too loose, and your training partners get extra sleeve handle to work with.

How to Pick Between A1 and A2 — The Stylso Sizing Method
Two measurements. One decision. Don’t guess.
- Measure your height barefoot. Stand with your back straight. Under 170 cm? You’re starting in A1 territory. At or above 170 cm? Start in A2 territory.
- Cross-check your weight. Use your normal training weight — not a goal weight, not your competition cut. If height and weight point the same direction, that’s your size. Done.
- Measure your jacket span if they split. Arms relaxed at your sides, measure from shoulder tip to shoulder tip across your upper back. The A1 jacket spans 160 cm. The A2 spans 169 cm. If your back measurement sits closer to 160, stay in A1. Closer to 169 or above, go A2.
- When in doubt, size up. Gis settle slightly after a few washes — even pre-shrunk pearl weave tightens a little. An A2 on a 169 cm frame won’t look oversized. It’ll give you the sleeve length you want on the mat.
What Judo Teaches About Gi Fit for Lighter Grapplers
In judo, coaches spend real time on sleeve control. The reason is simple: a sleeve that’s the wrong length changes the grip. Too short, and your opponent grabs the bone of your wrist instead of the fabric — that’s a power grip, not a technique grip. Too long, and the loose fabric becomes a handle they didn’t earn.
BJJ is the same. If your sleeves are too short, your training partner gets a wrist grip instead of a sleeve grip. Doesn’t sound like a big deal until you’re in guard, trying to break posture, and your grip keeps slipping. Lighter grapplers especially — who tend to play guard and rely on sleeve-and-collar control — notice this first. Sizing right isn’t just about comfort. It’s a technique decision.
If You’re Right Between Sizes
Some grapplers live on the line. Here’s the honest call for the most common edge cases.
- 170 cm and 74 kg: Height says A2, weight says A1. Check your jacket span. If your back measurement is under 165 cm, A1 fits. Above 165 cm, go A2 for the sleeve length.
- 168 cm and 80 kg: Height says A1, weight says A2. You’ve got a wider or heavier build for your height. Go A2 — the jacket span is where you’ll feel the difference.
- Long arms for your height: Size up. Always. Sleeve clearance is non-negotiable once you start competing, and you can’t add fabric on tournament morning.
- Competition cut: Some competitors drop one size for a tighter gi that’s harder to grip. Only do this if you confirm the smaller size still meets IBJJF sleeve rules — sleeves must reach within 5 cm of the wrist with arm extended.
Women’s Sizing — Same Chart, One Tip
Stylso uses the unisex A-series for adult women. You follow the same height and weight table above. Many women training BJJ fit best in A1 or even A0. Don’t assume A2 is the default — use the measurements. If you’re between sizes and want a trimmer fit, size down one.
Teens Moving Into Adult Sizing
Outgrown the kids K-series? A0 and A1 are the natural next step. A teen at 162–170 cm transitioning from K4 will usually land in A0 or A1, depending on shoulder width and weight. Don’t jump to A2 because it sounds more adult — the A1 jacket span (160 cm) is the right call for a growing athlete who hasn’t hit full adult proportions yet. See the kids BJJ gi size guide for the full K-series crossover chart.

FAQ — A1 vs A2 BJJ Gi
Is A1 or A2 bigger?
A2 is bigger. It’s built for grapplers at 170–178 cm and 77–86 kg. The A1 fits those at 168–170 cm and 70–77 kg. Every dimension — jacket span, jacket length, trouser length, and waist — is larger in the A2 by 3–9 cm.
What’s the exact cm difference between A1 and A2?
On the Stylso A-series: jacket span (A) is 160 cm for A1 vs 169 cm for A2 — a 9 cm difference. Jacket length (B) is 73 cm vs 76 cm (+3 cm). Trouser length (D) is 94 cm vs 99 cm (+5 cm). Waist (E) is 48 cm vs 51 cm (+3 cm). All from the official Stylso size chart.
I’m 169 cm and 75 kg — A1 or A2?
At 169 cm you’re at the top of the A1 height range and at 75 kg you’re mid-A1 on weight. Start with A1. Then check your jacket span — if your shoulder-to-shoulder back measurement is close to 169 cm or above, go A2 instead for the extra sleeve length.
I’m 170 cm and 78 kg — A1 or A2?
Go A2. At exactly 170 cm you’re at the bottom of the A2 height range, and at 78 kg your weight falls in the A2 bracket. The A2 jacket span and trouser length will fit correctly, and you’ll have washing margin on the sleeves.
Can women wear an A1 or A2 gi?
Yes — Stylso uses the unisex A-series for adults. Women follow the same height and weight chart. Many women in BJJ find A1 the right fit. If you’re between sizes and want a slimmer cut, size down one. See the best BJJ gi for women guide for more fit tips.
Will an A1 shrink to an A0 after washing?
No — not with normal washing. A cold wash on a pearl weave gi causes around 1–2% settling, which isn’t enough to drop a full size. The Stylso gi is pre-shrunk. Cold or warm washing won’t change the fit meaningfully. See the guide on how to stop a gi from shrinking if this is a concern.
