What Makes a Great Blue BJJ Gi
Not all blue gis are equal. Here’s what actually matters when you’re picking one.
Weave. Pearl weave is the standard for a reason. It’s tough, breaks in without going soft, and holds dye better than single weave. A blue single-weave gi fades faster — you’ll notice it after three months of training. Pearl weave holds the colour longer, wash after wash.
Pre-shrunk. Blue gis that haven’t been pre-shrunk can shift a full size after the first hot wash. That’s frustrating when you’ve just bought something. Look for a gi that lists “pre-shrunk” explicitly — it means the sizing you order is the sizing you keep.

How to Keep Your Blue Gi From Fading
Here’s what nobody tells you when you buy a blue gi: hot water and a tumble dryer are its worst enemies. Blue dye — especially on pearl weave — breaks down faster than white fabric does, because white doesn’t have to hold a pigment. Do this instead:
- Wash cold. 30°C max. Warm water opens the dye molecules and they bleed out fast.
- Turn it inside out. The outer face takes the friction in the drum — flipping it protects the colour.
- Skip the dryer. Hang it in the shade. Direct sun bleaches blue just as badly as heat. Five minutes in a hot dryer does what fifty cold washes won’t.
