How to Stop a BJJ Gi From Shrinking

Heat is the enemy of your gi’s fit. Wash in cold water (30°C / 86°F max), skip the dryer, hang dry in the shade, and reshape the collar and seams while still damp. A pre-shrunk pearl-weave gi like the Stylso also starts with far less give to lose — so your size stays your size.

  • Cold water only — heat breaks down cotton fibres and tightens the weave; cold stops it.
  • Never use a dryer — tumble heat is the fastest way to shrink a gi by a full size.
  • Start with a pre-shrunk gi — a pearl-weave gi already compacted in the factory loses far less on every wash.

Why BJJ Gis Shrink (the short version)

Most gi jackets and trousers are cotton or cotton-blend. Cotton fibres are naturally coiled. Heat from hot water or a dryer uncurls those fibres — and when they cool, they contract shorter than they started. That’s shrinkage.

A single hot wash can tighten a gi noticeably. A dryer is worse — it applies sustained heat for 30–60 minutes. The weave type matters too: a thick double-weave absorbs more heat energy than a lighter pearl weave. And a gi that hasn’t been pre-shrunk by the manufacturer still has its first contraction ahead of it.

None of this is permanent at one wash. But repeat hot washes compound. A gi that fits right at purchase can end up uncomfortably tight after a season of careless washing. The fix is simple — and free.

The Stylso 3-Rule Shrink Shield

Heat is what shrinks cotton — wash cold, hang dry, never tumble.

Three rules cover 95% of gi shrinkage. Get these right and the rest is detail.

  1. Cold water. Always. Set your machine to 30°C (86°F) or below. Delicate or sports cycle. Cold water cleans a sweaty gi just as well as hot — a proper sports detergent does the heavy lifting, not the temperature.
  2. Never the dryer. Tumble dryers are the single biggest cause of gi shrinkage. Pull the gi out of the machine immediately after the cycle ends and hang it up. No dryer exceptions — not even “just this once.”
  3. Hang dry, reshape while damp. Hang the jacket on a wide-shouldered hanger (a standard wire hanger bends the collar) and hang the trousers by the waistband. While still damp, pull the collar straight, smooth the side seams, and straighten the trouser seams by hand. They dry in shape.

That’s the Stylso 3-Rule Shrink Shield. Everything below adds margin on top of those three.

Wash Method Quick-Reference

Use this table to pick the right method and know what each one risks.

Wash Method Drying Method Shrink Risk Notes
Cold (≤30°C) Hang dry, shade 🟢 Very low The right method. Use every time.
Warm (40°C) Hang dry, shade 🟡 Low–moderate Fine occasionally; avoid routinely.
Cold (≤30°C) Tumble dryer 🔴 High Dryer heat undoes the cold wash benefit.
Hot (60°C+) Tumble dryer 🔴🔴 Very high Hard fail — expect a noticeably smaller gi.
Cold (≤30°C) Direct sun 🟡 Low–moderate Sun heat adds up in summer — shade is safer.

5 Extra Steps That Protect Your Gi Long-Term

The 3-Rule Shrink Shield stops shrinkage. These five extras extend the life of the gi and keep the weave tight:

  1. Use a mild sports or gentle detergent. Harsh detergent enzymes degrade cotton fibres over many washes. A sports wash (or half-dose of a standard gentle detergent) cleans the sweat without punishing the weave.
  2. Skip the fabric softener. Softener coats cotton fibres, which sounds good — but it gradually degrades the pearl weave’s tight construction. Leave it out.
  3. Fasten zips and velcro before washing. Open velcro catches on the weave and pulls threads loose. Zip the jacket collar closed before tossing it in.
  4. Wash after every session, but don’t over-wash. A sweaty gi left damp breeds bacteria and weakens fibres. Wash it after every training. But don’t double-wash “for freshness” — unnecessary washes add up.
  5. Store fully dry. Fold a damp gi and you get mildew. Make sure it’s completely dry before folding and putting away.

Does a Pre-Shrunk Gi Actually Help?

Yes — and it’s the most underrated buying decision in BJJ gear.

A gi that hasn’t been pre-shrunk still holds its first significant contraction. That means your brand-new A2 might wash down to something between A2 and A1 after a few hot sessions. A pre-shrunk gi has already been through that process in the factory. The cotton fibres have contracted and re-settled. What you buy is what you keep.

The Stylso pearl-weave gi is pre-shrunk and IBJJF-approved. Order your size from the chart — you don’t need to size up “for shrinkage.” A cold wash and hang dry will keep it right where it started. Check the current size availability on Amazon.

What to Do If Your Gi Already Shrank

If a previous hot wash tightened the fit, you’ve two options.

Option 1 — Wet stretch. Soak the gi in cool water for 10–15 minutes. While it’s still wet and heavy with water, gently pull the seams, collar, and trouser legs in the direction they’ve shrunk. Work slowly — cotton won’t stretch back much, but 1–2 cm is possible. Hang dry immediately in the stretched position.

Option 2 — Accept it and size up. If the gi has shrunk significantly (multiple hot washes), wet stretching won’t fix it. That gi has given back most of what it can. The smarter move is to check your size against the current chart and order correctly — especially if you’re now buying a pre-shrunk gi. FAQ — How to Stop a BJJ Gi From Shrinking

What temperature should I wash my BJJ gi at?

Wash your BJJ gi at 30°C (86°F) or below. Cold water cleans a sweaty gi just as effectively as hot — a sports or gentle detergent does the work, not the temperature. Anything above 40°C starts to stress the cotton fibres and risks shrinkage with each wash.

Can I put my BJJ gi in the dryer?

No. A tumble dryer applies sustained heat for 30–60 minutes — that’s the fastest way to shrink a gi. Always hang dry. Pull the gi out of the washing machine immediately after the cycle ends and hang on a wide hanger in the shade. It dries fully within a few hours.

How much will my BJJ gi shrink after washing?

A cold wash and hang dry causes minimal shrinkage — the fit stays very close to what you bought. A hot wash with a dryer can noticeably tighten the fit, especially on an untreated (not pre-shrunk) gi. A pre-shrunk gi like the Stylso A-series responds to cold washing with almost no change in dimensions.

Does a pre-shrunk gi still shrink?

Very little, if you follow cold-wash and hang-dry rules. Pre-shrunk means the cotton fibres already contracted in the factory — the biggest single-wash shrink is gone. Repeated hot washes can still cause gradual tightening over time, but cold washing a pre-shrunk gi keeps it stable wash after wash.

Can a shrunken gi be stretched back to its original size?

A little. Soak the gi in cool water, then gently pull the seams and collar while wet. You may recover 1–2 cm in key areas. But if the gi went through multiple hot washes, most of the shrinkage is permanent. Prevention (cold wash, no dryer) is far more effective than recovery.

Should I wash a new gi before wearing it?

Yes. Always cold-wash a new gi before the first session. It removes any residual dye, softener, or sizing from manufacturing — and for a non-pre-shrunk gi, the first cold wash causes most of the initial contraction in a controlled, minimal way. A Stylso pre-shrunk gi is ready after one cold wash.
